As
the Birmingham Association of REALTORS® President in 2001,
Kay Ray gave outstanding leadership and direction. Kay was
installed as the 90th President for the Birmingham Association
of REALTORS® at the annual Inaugural Program held on November
30th, 2000, at the Wynfrey.
Her
2001 Realtor Odyssey theme emphasized
(TEAM)
Together
Everyone
Accomplishes
More. She set the example
by sharing this vision and goals with the committee chairmen,
and then she let them "go to work" to get the job
done. She also encouraged the membership to get involved in
the work of their Association.
Kay
lead the Government Affairs Committee, working with government
leaders at the local, state and federal level to make lawmakers
aware of issues that affect real estate sales and leasing
transactions. Specific concerns were federal matching funds
for improvements to the 280 Corridor, and progress on the
Northern Beltline and Corridor X. Another major subject that
was addressed was the need for proposed Biomedical Facility
at UAB, which would create hundreds of high tech jobs and
spin off many new support industries as well.

What
is something most people don't know about Kay?
"I
love to watch sunsets and I always know when there are full
moons. I enjoy the outdoors, but don't like to sweat."
What
have you tried to accomplish as President of the Birmingham
Association of Realtors?
"I
have attempted to get more agents involved at a local level.
Most agents who come into the office have the grandiose idea
that 'I can make a difference'; however, sometimes you run
into complacency. That makes the job more difficult."
What
improvements have you seen during your time as president?
"As
president of the association, I help people in our profession
keep current with new rules and regulations, updates, technology
and services."
What is your proudest accomplishment so far as president?
"Most
people do not know that NAR (National Association of Realtors)
is the largest + PAC in the country - Realtor involvement
exceeds teamsters, and trial lawyers; Alabama Realtors rank
number one out of all the states as the most politically active.
However, less than 7% contribute."
Why
do you think that the real estate market remains as strong
as it is today?
"The
metro Birmingham area has dad so much growth with new industry
and firms coming to the area. This has brought a steady influx
of new clients into our market. The funny thing is that a
lot of the people who move here are kicking and screaming
because of a perception of Birmingham, but when they get here,
they love it, and decide to stay. Birmingham is a well-kept
secret."
What does it take to be successful in this business?
"A commitment! Always put your best foot forward; enjoy
the ride; have a good sense of humor and a good attitude."
